Living so close to the border with North Wales means that I am able to access a completely different landscape relatively easily. It’s a real bonus to have such a varied and constant source of inspiration for my work.
The hills and valleys of the mountainous areas present different shapes, textures and colour palette from my usual work along the coastlines. It is also a more challenging terrain to set up to work directly from the surroundings. Purple Valley was inspired by the heather clad hills on Llandegla Moors near Wrexham - the gateway to the more mountainous areas surrounding Bala and Dolgellau. The day was clear, dry and fresh, with only a slight breeze which made working there a pleasure. Heather is a surprisingly soft cushion!
Acrylic paint on a 76 x 92cm box canvas and displayed within a white wood float tray frame.
