Having grown up on The Wirral I was surrounded by coastal references from the Dee and Mersey rivers, at the same time enjoying easy access to the mountainous and coastal areas of North Wales. Regular trips to the north Cornwall coast have punctuated my life as a painter over the years.

These locations still remain a vital source of inspiration for my work.

I graduated with a BA Hons degree in Fine Art from Bristol, where I studied under the guidance and mentorship of the highly acclaimed artist Paul Feiler.

After a thirty year career in Art & Design education alongside my own personal creative development, I finally decided to concentrate solely on my own artistic practice.

My work is concerned with the elemental relationship between land, sea and sky. The inspiration for my paintings is deeply entrenched in these early visual experiences, and they continue to inform the energetic mark making and gestural paint application that characterises my work.

I always work on location connecting immediately and directly with both the canvas and the surroundings.

The experience of working within nature and responding directly to the environment offers up an honesty and freshness that I find difficult to replicate back in a studio situation, and I feel that it wouldn’t reflect the emotional and personal response of that initial sensory experience.
