This painting was the result of a lot of time spent working on the Dee estuary at Thurstaston and Hoylake on The Wirral. The shifting patterns of the sand along the beach and the ever-changing reshaping of the sandbar have been a constant source of inspiration for me.

I like to paint directly onto canvas at my chosen location - sometimes I feel that the freshness and spontaneity of the experience can be lost once back at the studio, so where possible I like to work with an immediate response to the conditions surrounding me.

This box canvas at 90 x 90cm was not particularly easy to transport, but the layers of acrylic paint and direct mark making in response to the changing light and tides give it an energy and uniqueness that would have been difficult to replicate away from the location. The effort was worthwhile.

Acrylic paint on a 90 x 90cm box canvas and displayed within a substantial white wood tray frame.
