October In Cornwall

October in Cornwall

It’s always good to be painting down in Cornwall, which has now become a bit of an annual pilgrimage for me – the light, the artist community and of course the rugged beauty of the inspiring north coast.

I was so lucky with the weather – clear conditions, bright vibrant colours and lots to keep me busy on the headland at Botallack.

The acrylic paint wasn’t drying out as quickly as it did at the start of the summer, so I was able to work into the paint to create more textures………. but it also meant that I wasn’t able to layer paint as quickly as usual, so I ended up having several canvases on the go at once.

Blue was definitely the order of the day on these canvases.

My aim was to focus on the interaction between sea and sky, responding to the changing conditions throughout the day.

Spending a couple of days at Cape Cornwall where there was a bit more movement – sea and sky, I was able to enjoy a more comprehensive range of colour. This area around Priests Cove allowed me to commit more energy and applied texture to the canvases, inspired by the force of water on the rocks.

I tend to work quickly and spontaneously, responding directly to the elements, in short bursts of energy – probably an age thing!
